Bass Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes;2/27/09
Bass Buster Guide Service

Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Ky Dam - 355.52 Surface Temperature - 46
Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 355.70 Surface Temperature - 46

Both lakes are about one and one half feet over winter pool. The forecast for today and thru the weekend is for high north quadrant winds to begin after a frontal passage later this morning. A chance of rain/snow is in the forecast for Saturday. A warming trend is in the forecast for next week so let's hope the weather guessers are right and we will be getting some more favorable conditions for fishing than what they are forecasting for this weekend. The early prespawn patterns for Bass and Crappie continue to dominate the fishing scene on days that the wind and weather will let you venture onto the lake. Lake Barkley is heavily stained and Ky Lake is stained.

Largemouth: Largemouth Bass are being taken on main lake primary and secondary points, channel banks and secondary points and creek channel banks in the mouths of the creeks and bays. These fish are being taken on suspending jerk baits, slow rolled crankbaits, shakey heads and jigs. The jig and shakey head bite this past week seems to be the better bite as the water temperatures had dropped from the cold fronts we had earlier in the week. On warmer days Largemouth are also being taken late in the morning and in the afternoon in shallow water in the creeks and bays on lipless crankbaits.

Smallmouth: Smallmouth Bass are being taken on main lake primary and secondary points and channel banks. Although there still have been no reports of big numbers of these fish, there have been some bigger fish taken. These fish are being taken on suspending jerkbaits, slow rolled crankbaits and jigs.

Some of the productive lures reported this week are: Rapala husky jerk in clown, Rapala X-rap in olive green, Rapala shad rap in crawdad and black/silver, Strike King medium running flat sides in green tomato, Bandit medium running crankbaits in black/red and crawfish/chartruese, Net baits baby paca craw in green pumpkin, Last Cast jigs in green pumpkin and Zoom trick worms on shakey heads in green pumpkin.

Crappie: Crappie are being taken over brush piles near the mouths of the creeks and on the main lake in 15-20 ft of water using small jigs and minnow/jig combinations fished on spider rigs. There have been a few reports of large numbers but more small fish than keepers.

We are about to get busy here at the lakes as the bass anglers are gearing up for the early spring tournaments that are getting underway starting next week and the crappie anglers are starting to show up in numbers for their annual spring crappie fishing. If you are coming to the lakes area to enjoy our great spring fishing I would like to recommend that you stop by Fisherman's Headquarters in Draffenville and The Cabin Bait and Tackle in Kuttawa for your tackle needs. Both stores are top notch and have everything you need from your old favorites to the latest in bass fishing lures as well as light tackle and live bait for the pan fishermen. You will find the folks at both these stores knowledgeable and more than helpful in assisting you to have a great trip. If you are in the market for a new or used boat or need some service on your boat, stop by Jet-A-Marina located in Calvert City just north of Ky Dam. The folks there are known far and wide for providing the best in service and always go the extra mile to make sure your needs are met.
