Brent Sporleder & Kevin Cupp Take the Win!!

The Central Illinois Division of Fishers of Men kicked off the 2008 tournament season Friday night at the First Christian Church in Clinton with fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, and dinner rolls. All the home cooking was supplied by our hometown proud IGA in Clinton. There were fifty eight people present at the meeting to hear the director of Fishers of Men give his testimony about how God has worked in his life. Eleven people rededicated their lives to Christ! Thank you Jesus!

Saturday morning the temps were in the low to middle thirties with rain and winds at 15 to 20 mph. These aren’t the kinds of conditions anyone wants for a nine hour day on the lake. These veteran tournament fishermen know it is just another variable to take into account while trying to figure out the fish. At safe light twenty nine teams from all over Illinois set out to hopefully catch a limit of five bass and to get ahead in the points not to mention win some big money. The rain never stopped all day except for the occasional flurry or sleet shower.  The weather conditions didn’t seem to have much effect on the fish as the 3:00PM weigh-in showed us that twenty of the twenty nine teams brought back at least one bass.

It was the team of Brent Sporleder of  Fisher and Kevin Cupp of  Mansfield who would out fish the rest of the field with a five fish limit weighing 18.84 lbs. They also caught the largest bass of the tournament that weighed 5.43 lbs. Brent said they didn’t have a fish until 11:00 AM. They reported catching their fish with jigs, lizards, and tubes fishing deep main lake wood. Also Brent said they were fishing very slow. They received first place plaques and a big bass plaque along with $1218.00 in cash.

Finishing in second place with another five fish limit weighing 16.06 lbs was the team of Brad Lutz of Fisher and Kyle Danhausen of Kankakee. They Reported catching their fish on the main lake fishing a combination of rock and wood. They were also fishing slow using CCL Jigs and crankbaits tied on with Gamma flourocarbon line on Shimano rods and reels. This team is sponsored by Shimano, Gamma, and Pro-Mariner battery chargers. For their efforts the team won $860.50. They are also in the lead for the 2008 points champion pot.

Third place was none other than our 2007 Points Champions Bryan Williams and Michael Sanders with five fish that weighed in at 10.21lbs earning them $573.50. These guys were consistently finishing in the top 5 last year and look to stay on track this season.

Fourth Place was the team of Travis Boley of nearby Weldon and John McKinney of Mahomet with four bass weighing 8.48lbs They received $419.00.

Fifth Place was the team of Ian Estes and father George Estes both of Mahomet. They weighed in three fish weighing 7.62 lbs and was awarded a check for $238.00

Sixth Place was the team of Mark Vos from White Heath and fifteen year old Daniel Ruedi of Champaign with two bass weighing 6.78 lbs one of which was the second largest bass caught Saturday weighing 5.05 lbs giving them $116. Mark is fishing the FLW tour series this season and is sponsored by Lethal Weapon jigs, Berkley, and Roboworm. Daniel finished 4th in the National Guard Junior World Championship last season netting him a sponsorship from Berkley. Way to start the season Daniel!

Rounding out the the top ten were as follows.

Seventh Place: Bryan Thrasher / Jeff Henson -3 fish – 6.69lbs

Eighth Place: Bob Nelson / Jack Peplow – 2 fish – 6.24lbs

Ninth Place: Dave Blume / Art Griggs – 3 fish – 6.18lbs
