Barry And Jarrid Bucciarelli Win the Fishers Of Men Midwest Regional Championship, Detroit River
By Frank Evans

1st place Barry and Jarrid Bucciarelli

The skillful Father/Son team of Barry and Jarrid Bucciarelli added a 20.64lbs limit to supplement their leading Day-1 weight of 19.41, to win a brand new fully rigged Triton TR-186/Mercury Optimax 150hp combination. The two successful competitors also were presented attractive award plaques, and the 2006 Midwest Regional Championship title for a two-day total of 40.05 lbs. Barry reaffirmed that by having his GPS unit mounted on the bow of his boat that they were able to stay right on top of their located fish and keep their baits in the strike zone. By placing dark/purple tubes at the 15 ft. depth along rocky humps that had created eddy swirls and current breaks in the fast flowing river, the talented pair estimated that they had caught 50 to 60 bass during the event.

2nd place Jeff St Clair and Rick Hartwig

Wisconsin East anglers, Jeff St Clair and Rick Hartwig brought in the tournament high bag limit of 23.40lbs to lift them from Day one’s 16th slot all the way up to second place. The partners ended up with 39.07lbs at the close of the tournament. The bag-busting limit fell for tube baits fished in 15ft. of water out at the Peelee Islands. On Day-1, fish were caught on topwater lures.

3rd place Matt Elkins and Jason Mershman

Third place finishers, Matt Elkins and Jason Mershman (Wisconsin East), moved up from 10th place with 20.51lbs, to add to Day one’s 17.47, for a total of 10 fish weighing 37.98lbs. Most of Matt and Jason’s bass fell for Cucumber Gobys fished on a drop shot rig up in the St.Clair River.

4th place Bob and Bill Kowal

Bob and Bill Kowal captured 4th place with a 2-day weight (18.59 and 18.51) of 37.10lbs. The Michigan Southwest Division anglers also caught the Day-2 second Big Bass weighing 5.25lbs, worth $300.00. Also fishing up on the St.Clair River, Bob and Bill utilized spinnerbaits, tubes with half oz. weights to get them down in the current, and the drop shot rig.

5th place Sean Frame and his son Michael

Perennial favorite, Sean Frame and his son Michael, netted 17.75 (Day One) and 19.15 (Day Two) to finish in the 5th slot with a total of 36.90lbs.

Wisconsin East anglers, Bob Lloyd and Joe Stiehl, along with the Wisconsin West team of Craig Tanner and Mike Schnur, tied for 6th place with 35.64 lbs each. Bob and Joe brought in 18.87 on Day-1 and 16.77 on Day-2. Craig and Mike netted 17.31 and 18.33, respectively. The two teams split the 6th and 7th payouts evenly.

Overall Big Bass Tim and Chad Andrea

The Day-2 and overall tournament 1st Big Bass ($500.00) was brought to the scales by Wisconsin West anglers, Tim and Chad Andrea. The 5.36lbs smallmouth was included in a 5-fish limit weighing 14.35lbs.

Over the course of the Midwest Division Championship event, competitors landed 614 bass, weighing 1695.83lbs for an average weight of 2.76lbs that included 76, 5-fish limits from this spectacular fishery. Most all anglers used tubes and drop shotted Gobys, while several others had success burning spinnerbaits on St.Clair grass flats and crankbaits in deeper areas. One team reported using plastic frogs in the “slop” to catch their bass..
